ITEM NUMBER 6

BOARD MEMBER NUMBERS

Date to be tabled: 18 April 2005

****************************************************

BACKGROUND/ISSUES

[Note: these templates illustrate how background information might be presented to the meeting. Information about the issue and any different scenarios or actions that the board/committee may need to consider should be included here, including any relevant policy, strategic planning items etc. It is good to list any potential benefits or detriments here that you may be aware of if the decision goes ahead. Try to keep the information short, i.e. 1-2 pages. There needs to be enough information for the group to reach an informed and reasonable decision including ramifications, costs, etc. Any anticipated opposition to the decision also needs to be outlined.]

Several board members feel that the current board membership of six is inadequate for the workload and functioning of the board.

However, some board members were concerned that it may be difficult to recruit new members and that raising the number of members would just result in more people not turning up to meetings.

This raised the issue of board recruitment and retention processes, and how engaged the membership are with our organisation.

Recommended Decision:

1. Agree to raise member numbers to nine, noting that constitutional change will be required.

2. Review board member recruitment and induction processes before the next AGM.

Action Item:

1. Executive Officer to redraft policy re: numbers on board and present to next meeting of board.

2. Item for next board meeting agenda: approval of new policy.
