The ACT Council of Social Service is today celebrating fifty years of community building in Canberra. ACTCOSS is the peak representative body for not-for-profit community organisations, people living with disadvantage and low-income citizens of the Territory.
Jenny Kitchin, President of ACTCOSS, said today, "I have been on the General Committee at various times over the past 25 years and have seen not only the organisation go through many changes but also the community sector. Through many challenges ACTCOSS has survived and thrived as an agency strongly advocating for its members and the community more broadly.
"From humble beginnings, ACTCOSS has grown to a membership of 200 people and organisations, and a staff of nine. That's a long way from the lounge room meetings of five Canberra social workers who got ACTCOSS underway in 1963.
"I am so looking forward to our celebration tonight. One of the founding members of ACTCOSS will join these celebrations, we will hear reflections from people who have given decades of service to ACTCOSS and the Deputy Chief Minister will share his thoughts on how ACTCOSS has contributed to the life of Canberra."
Susan Helyar, Director of ACTCOSS, said today, "ACTCOSS provides an important mechanism through which people and organisations in Canberra can come together to build this community, drive social change and bring the voice of those who face disadvantage, discrimination or vulnerability to the centre of decision-making.
"At our Annual General Meeting today we will be launching our 2014-2018 Strategic Plan. This plan builds on fifty years of work by ACTCOSS to build a fair and equitable community that respects and values diversity, human rights and sustainability and promotes justice, equity, reconciliation and social inclusion," Ms Helyar concluded.
