Certain population groups experience higher rates of disadvantage because of historical structures which limited opportunity and denied equality. Women are one such group. Women are a diverse group whose experiences of disadvantage and privilege are intersected by ‘race’, ethnicity, class, disability, and sexual orientation.
ACTCOSS actively works to ensure that all women in Canberra are able to fully realise their human rights and that social inclusion, equality and fairness are all achieved in relation to gender.
We also acknowledge that gendered disadvantage is experienced by transsexual women and transgender people. ACTCOSS acknowledges and supports the work of transgender people and activists to realise their human rights as part of the struggle for full gender equality.
