Submission: Introduction of a community based sentencing option in the ACT Justice Reform Strategy stage one

Publication date:
June 2015

In this submission to the ACT Justice Reform Strategy, the ACT community sector's Justice Reform Group strongly supports the introduction of non-custodial sentences in the ACT, as it provides an opportunity for more diverse and tailored approaches to sentencing. Community based sentencing could address some of the social determinants of offending and re-offending – such as alcohol and other drug issues, mental health issues and lack of economic opportunities. It represents an opportunity to shift the balance away from punishment to preventative, restorative and rehabilitative options and a problem solving approach.
