Journal - 'Update'

ACTCOSS produces a regular journal, Update. Each journal gives members the opportunity to discuss and promote a specific topic.

Update is available to over 500 subscribers through our Weekly Community Sector eNotices, plus we email the journal directly to over 200 community organisation members and associate members, and community sector officials in ACT Government directorates. We also post hard copies to politicians (ACT MLAs, Federal Ministers and Senators).

Journals are available for download below. We are happy to print and post journals to members on request.

Advertising: ACTCOSS offers paid advertising space in the journal for community service related items. Find out more about our journal advertising rates and specifications.

Note: We are in the process of uploading back issues of the journal. If there's a specific issue you're after, please contact us.

Next Edition

Issue 93 of the ACT Council of Social Service’s journal Update will have the theme of:

Celebrating and supporting the ACT’s community sector workforce

Would you like to contribute an article as a service user, a worker, a manager, an individual or as a representative of your organisation? Let us know ASAP to guarantee your spot. It's free to submit an article, or you can pay to run an ad.

Deadline for contributions: COB 29 March 2021.

Some ideas for articles include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Celebration: Share something you would like to celebrate about your colleagues or the broader ACT community sector workforce. If this is unique to our sector, how can we ensure it continues? Is there good practice in other sectors that we should explore?
  • Effective planning: What kind of funding, organisational, and other structures will support effective workforce planning in your organisation? How will these structures support the recruitment and retention of individuals with the skills and abilities to meet current and future needs? How will these structures ensure quality services and positive outcomes?
  • COVID adaptation: How did your organisation adapt its workforce arrangements during and after COVID-19? What worked and how could you as a worker or your organisation have been supported better?
  • Engagement: Tell us how your organisation keeps its workforce engaged – it may be something done across the whole organisation or only in your team. How important is this when working directly with or on behalf of people in need of community services?
  • Diversity and inclusion: How does your organisation value diversity and implement inclusion in the workplace? What progress have you seen in addressing and reducing the impacts of exclusion and stigma? What key gaps remain?
  • Volunteers: What role do volunteers and the multiple roles they play support your programs/organisation? What is your experience as a volunteer in the ACT community sector?
  • Innovation and improvement: How does your team/organisation strive for innovation and continuous improvement in the planning and delivery of services and workforce development?

Word count: Up to 1000 words.
