Carers ACT support family members or friends who provide assistance with the tasks of daily living to someone who lives with a disability, a medical condition, a mental illness or is frail and aged.  As a trusted partner in care, we aim to enable carers to undertake their role with capacity and capability whilst also enabling carers to participate in everyday activities such as employment, education, and social activities by providing a range of integrated services and supports.

We are the voice for carers in the ACT and work with industry and government to make Canberra a more carer-friendly community.



We are seeking an Aboriginal Engagement Officer to become part of our Carer Gateway team to bring culturally sensitive care to the carers in our Indigenous community.

Being a Care planner is a reward in itself supporting carers to help them early in their caring role. Through a range of tailored supports and services, carers can be supported to manage their daily challenges, reduce stress, plan for the future and ultimately improve their wellbeing.

A care planner works with the carer through their journey to connect, support and empower our carers through various stages of their caring experience. We recognise that every carer’s experience is unique and constantly endeavour to respond to the individual needs and support them.  This is done through:

  • Conducts assessments on carers and/or care recipient needs that come through the Carer Gateway to develop Carer Support and Action plans 
  • Coordinator and facilitate social groups and programs for Aboriginal Carers providing support while maintaining cultural connection
  • Engage in outreach, networking and maintain relationships with the Aboriginal Community
  • Works collaboratively with internal and external services to ensure comprehensive care arrangements are in place for carers and/or clients with care needs.
  • Maintains transparent relationships with all carers and stakeholders by fostering a relationship built on trust
  • Maintains relationships with service providers to remain up to date with service offerings, capacity, and referral pathways ensuring flexible brokerage can be delivered to support carers
  • Engage in complex families and problem solving



  • Working within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberra Community and networks including attending NAIDOC events and Reconciliation events.

  • Must identify as Aboriginal
  • Working with Vulnerable People (NDIS).
  • You must be up to date with COVID vaccinations (including booster)
  • Current Driver’s License.



  • Qualification in Community Services or Mental Health, Case Management or equivalent and experience working in the health and/or community care sectors or willingness to complete.
  • Experience with case planning and goal setting with a positive outcome.
  • Connection to cultural groups with an understanding of Aboriginal culture.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft office & databases)
  • Communication/interpersonal skills.
